Hey friends, we'll I'm slowly unpacking the boot after my move to Wordpress blogging independence. Update your bookmarks as you'll now find me at http://www.current-observations.com but http://blog.current-observations.com will also still work. I hope you'll drop in for a visit soon.

I'm Moving...

Well not literally, this is a cyber move. I have decided to take the plunge and enter the world of a self-hosted Wordpress blog. Thanks to the lovely Tara at Scoutie Girl I'm setup and good to go. I would like to think that everything will go swimmingly but, well, that would be too Pollyanna of me. I hope you can put up with me while I'm ironing out my technology teething issues and moving my domain name, posts, images and comments. I will be reverting this blog back to theheasmans.blogspot.com and reclaiming current-observations for the new one. Wish me luck and I'll meet you on the other side.

{P.S. I found the photographer... I love it when that happens.... you can see this photo and more}

Can I Help You?

I have a confession... I'm a bit of a web nerd. This has been many years in the making but it's something I love and 3 days a week I get paid to be one. So here's what I've been noticing. Many talented blogging artisans struggle with the technology behind their blogs. This was a resounding theme in Tara Frey's book Blogging Your Bliss and it started me thinking. For a while now I have been harbouring the idea of adding Tutorial or How To posts to my blog. Do you have a nagging question that you would like answered by a web nerd like me? Have you seen something cool on a blog and thought 'how did they do that?'. You have! Excellent... leave me a comment.
Image from Remo General Store shows the front and back of the Body tag t-shirt and yes, in case you're wondering, I do own this t-shirt.

Colour Me Happy Wednesday :: Slate Grey

I didn't realise this before but the etsy colour search tools do not cater for black, white or shades of grey which makes sense being as they are 'colour' search tools. I do love what I found by doing a keyword search and it didn't take long at all for these treasures to appear. They are:
TOP: Sasha Sews Medium tote - Dandelion Circles - natural osnaburg linen. This store has a great range of storage boxes which is very timely now that I'm trying to work out how to store my fabric stash.
MIDDLE: Joom's Slate Bird on Cherry Blossom Pillow because you can never have too many pillows or birds or even cherry blossom for that matter.
BOTTOM: Gloaming Design's Deux Slate - Pillow Cover Vintage. I just love this cushion and I especially love this photo... so quintessentially French. Gloaming Designs shop owner splits her time between the US and France, now wouldn't that be nice?

Chocolate Anyone?

In our house Easter chocolates appear in nests in the garden on Easter Sunday. They build their nests (and ours) and our little men end up with a giant stash of assorted chocolate. It's the only day of the year that they can have chocolate with breakfast. I think we are now all overloaded on it - if that's possible. Here's a picture of my little man with his stash (the Easter bunny is very organised and fair) and his Mannie bear hot on the trail of the eggs left by the Easter bunny. Happy Easter everyone.

Can You See The Connection?

I promise this was a happy coincidence. I survived my visit to the handmade market last weekend... it was really busy but I managed to get my lamp from The Owls Are Hunting and even came home with some money in my wallet! My lamp is now sitting on a recycled wooden bookshelf in our family room and on the same wall sits my Party of Nine from Yumi Yumi etsy store. I did not make the connection in the colours until I gave my lamp a home. Do you think we are attracted to certain colours? I'm not sure I could have made this match so well if I tried.

Colour Me Happy Wednesday :: Light Green

I hope you'll humour me with my colour me happy post today. I thought that light green would be in abundance and yield an array of eye catching results that would have me scratching my head and trying to work out which to use. How wrong I was, well that was until I found the image at top... look closely and you'll see my colour. Once I landed at Lola's Room Photography etsy store I couldn't stop at one image, they are all beautiful and very nostalgic. So my light green comes to you today from the same place. The images are:
TOP: Cotton 8 x 8 Print
MIDDLE: Simplicity 8 x 8 Print
BOTTOM: Sunday 8 x 8 Print

Studio Tour :: Favourite Equipment

This week's challenge it to take you on a studio tour or introduce you to my favourite equipment. I so wish I could take you on a studio tour but the truth is the magic happens in a study I share with my darling husband. You've already seen my lovely workspace and on the other wall sits my sewing table with my trusty Bernina sewing machine that I bought in Atlanta so I have to use a converter to change the voltage from 240 to 110 - one day I'll change the motor. So let me introduce you to my favourite equipment. Without a doubt it would be my iMac... I just love it and being a Mac user is a new thing for me. I was 100% a Windows girl up until August last year when I took the plunge. There is no turning back for me and my darling husband now refers to me as an 'Apple Fan Boy' - thanks to my iPhone, iPod and iMac.. and yes I do want an iPad. My favourite tools on my iMac are without a doubt Adobe Illustrator (there's a sneak peek of my next Uni assignment due tomorrow). Adobe Dreamweaver that I've been using since the time there was a company called Macromedia. My new favourite tool is Evernote, I have it on my iMac, iPhone, my PC at work and I can also access it online. It just keeps my overflowing thoughts in one easy place that I can reference. Now back to that assignment.

What's On Your Bedside Table?

On my way past my bed this morning, it dawned on me that I have a lot of books that I'm part way through at the moment. I always read before I go to sleep and my choice is based on how the mood strikes. This started me thinking... what do other people have on their beside tables? I'd love to know. Here's my lineup:
  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson- intriguing but I'm such a slow reader.
  • The Canberra Gardener - my garden bible that advises me on where to plant. If only it could teach me how to keep camellias alive and what to do with the dense Canberra soil.
  • Blogging for Bliss by Tara Frey - not a bad read but having working in the web world for more than a decade it didn't teach me anything new.
  • The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams - this is the textbook to the subject I'm studying this semester. I think it's a funny recommendation for people that are studying graphic design. Having said that it's been a truly informative book.
  • Designing Logos - The Process of Creating Symbols that Endure by Jack Gernsheimer. A really great book even just for the history of some of the world's most recognised logos.
  • The last two copies of Real Living - the only magazine I read and too quickly because then I'm always waiting by the mailbox for the next one.
  • The last Hancocks of Paducah catalogue - a visual feast.
  • The Real Living summer cookbook - in case I need a little gastronomic inspiration before bed.
OK - your turn. What's on your beside table?

Colour Me Happy Wednesday :: Turquoise

I was very excited by my colour this week, I just had a good feeling that turquoise would yield some great results. It's not a colour I normally go for, although I do have a turquoise shirt that I just love. Here's what I found:
TOP: mlwdesigns Teal Sunflower print (close enough to turquoise to me).
MIDDLE: Elloh's Secret Agent and the Red Balloon limited edition print. This one really made me smile... apparently it's a part of a whole series. Go and have a look at her mini library book complete with library card... adorable.
BOTTOM: Kainkain's Black Linen with Turquoise Chrysant Flower - there's just nothing like a cushion cover to change the mood of the room, don't you think?

The Owls are Hunting at Handmade Market - 1 Week To Go

Only 1 week to go and it's on again! The quarterly Handmade Market is of course what I'm talking about... go and have a look at the designers that will be attending and tell me you wish you could be in Canberra next Sunday. If you are already here then don't miss it! I have already bought something.. this gorgeous Jenny lamp will be waiting for me (with a discount I'm told). This is by local artisan Jo Kent who is the talent behind The Owls Are Hunting vintage inspired lamps to light up your life. Now where should I put it?

Another Lovely Bluebirdluxe Giveaway

The lovely Eileen over at bluebirdluxe is running a giveaway for this book, which I really want to win so I'm making every effort to check all the entry boxes! My grandmother did beautiful crochet and I know if she were still alive she would be so chuffed to see how much the art of crochet is still so prolific - maybe even more so. I've seen some lovely crochet lariats on Etsy and I would really like to try my hand at one.

Colour Me Happy Wednesday :: Beige

Who knew that the colour associated with 1970s bland would yield such treasures in my colour search today. To be honest I didn't hold out much hope with beige... but just look at what I found:
TOP: Badbird's Gold Fish - this one made me smile because the last two weeks the little one has brought home books about fish from the preschool library. First it was "Ugly Fish" which is not a nice story about a fish that eats all the other fish that end up in his bowl and wonders why he doesn't have any friends - I'm sure there's a moral in there somewhere. The second one was the "Unhappy Gold Fish" who is in a bowl that is way too small for him and ends up being scooted around the town by a dog!
MIDDLE: Rock Anemone by Simone Russell - there's definitely a theme developing in my choices today but I did love the organic shape of this table sculpture.
BOTTOM: Orla tea towel by Skinny Laminx. I confess I have been a fan of South African Heather Moore for quite some time now. I just love that she produces a pattern that some of us would look at and instantly think 'Orla Kiely' and she's called it orla by way of dedication. She is not trying to steal someone else's work and while I would love to vent on this topic right now I'll save it for another time.

Eames Design and the Story of Two Blogs

Without giving away too much... remember there's a give away being drawn on Saturday. I have been researching stamp designs for an upcoming assignment. I do like being set the task to search for things that I don't usually consider. There are some really amazing stamps out there.  I stumbled across this series celebrating Eames design. I do love the chairs and I think the Hang It All (left middle) would look great in our house and I've just discovered I can buy a replica from Matt Blatt. As part of my university studies all my research and final assignments are posted to a blog that I have on my subject site. So now I'm essentially writing two blogs but unfortunately I can't share that one with you. I might give you glimpses though... is that OK?

Colour Me Happy Wednesday :: Navy

The colour pickers cannot understand these deep colours so once again I have resorted to just a keyword search. Isn't it funny how a colour can have an instant association? Navy made me think nautical and France... I have also just returned from seeing the Masterpieces from Paris exhibition for the second time so I have had a whole morning of all things French! Not surprisingly my eye picked up the stripes. Here's what I found:
TOP: Red Bird Style Navy and White Cowl/Scarf. I especially love the red buttons.
MIDDLE: Bayan Hippo Sailor Tote Bag makes me wish I was on a boat somewhere.
BOTTOM: Farouche happy happy giclee print actually made me smile.

Don't You Just Love Telephone Companies?

We have had an interesting time with our telephone company this weekend. We lost phone and internet on Friday night, we had no phone (just mobiles) all Saturday and no internet. Our phone returned on Saturday evening but still no internet.. can you imagine? No *gasp* blogging. Do you remember what you did before the internet? Let's just say our garden is practically free from weeds, trees have been trimmed, my blog redesign is taking shape and this morning I finished the 25km of the Big Canberra Bike Ride. By Sunday we had a phone... or so we thought... that was until a lovely lady called (using speed dial) her parents and got me... a lot of confusion ensued and we finally established that we had a phone alright but not our number. We now had someone else's phone number, they had nothing and our number had presumably disappeared. And still not internet. You may have already guessed that since I am now back at my blog then all has been fixed... and you would be right. And the problem? Some vandals who thought it would be a good joke to quite literally get our wires crossed.
